Recommended attractions outside Sundsvall town.
Before heading off to the attractions, be sure

Södra
stadsberget (South hill)
The serpentine road leading up to the Southern
mountain is fun driving for mc-enthusiasts and
once you´ve reached the extensive plateau
you have splendid views of the centre and surroundings.
The mountain is 250 m. high and this area is particularly
good for hiking, with trails up to 12 km long.
During winter you can practise downhill or cross
country skiing here. In 1992 Sundsvall hosted
a World cup competition for ladies here. Hotell
Södra Berget organizes shows and conserts.

Norra
stadsberget (North hill)
About 2 km from the main square.
The editor´s favourite spot in Sundsvall.
Outstanding views of the town centre from an altitude
of 150 m.
From the centre you walk in the direction towards
the Idrottsparken football stadium and then continue
up the hill until you reach the wooden stairway.
Continue your walk up to the viewpoint, nicknamed
the Glasspinnen (ice cream stick).
In the area you will also find an outdoor museum,
a collection of old and interesting local houses,
hiking trails, playground and a museum of handicrafts
and naval history. At the museum you can see the
only existing specimen of the mysterious
Skvadern,
half hare, half wood grouse. At Norra Berget you
will also find a replica of the famous church
in Liden.

Alnö island
Alnö is a summer retreat with inviting beaches.
Of these, Tranviken, on the southern tip, is the
best and most popular.
Not far from
Tranviken beach you
will find the next attraction, Spikarna (see below).
Location: On southern Alnö Island about 25
km east of Sundsvall. Alnö island is connected
to the mainland by a
bridge, constructed
1961-1964. At that time the longest (1042 m.)
bridge in Sweden.
Spikarna fisherman´s village
Not to be missed! Idyllic fisherman´s
village on Alnö Island, with fishing cabins,
sheds, a chapel, and a café. Location:
On the southern tip of Alnö Island Turn
right right after passing Alnö bridge and
follow the signs.

Alnö kyrka (Alnö Church)
Constructed in 1896 in neo-gothic style, designed
by F Boberg. The 12th-century wooden baptismal
font is a famous feature, moved here from the
old church next door.

Alnö gamla kyrka (Old Alnö
Church)
Mediaeval church built in 1190. Medelpad province's
oldest preserved church, whose interior is considered
one of the finest in the country. The walls
are decorated with paintings from the end of
the 1400s.

Sundsvall strike memorial
Sweden's largest memorial to the labour movement.
This was the place where strikers gathered in
1879 to oppose major pay cuts. Location: Just
south of central Sundsvall on the E4.

Mid Sweden
University
The Mid Sweden University is frequented by 4500
students. The campus is a collection of very
beautifully designed buildings. Mid Sweden University
is a network university with campuses in four
cities: Sundsvall, Härnösand, Östersund,
and Örnsköldsvik.
The Sundsvall university campus was awarded
with the international Charter awards prize
in May 2005. It is a prize equal to the Oscar
statuette. The prize was given in the branch
"Block, Street & Building". The
motivation was that the Sundsvall university
is a first class example of how you may include
a town within the town.

The Graves in Högom
Norrland's largest ancient grave field, from
400-550 A.D, with 10 burial mounds and a runestone.
One excavation located the Chief of Högom.
Exhibit at the Sundsvall Museum (in Kulturmagasinet).
Location: Högom, Granlo. About 2 km west
of Sundsvall on the way to Bergsåker,
route 86.
Skönsmons
kyrka (Skönsmon church)
New romantic style. Constructed by famous architect
Isaak Gustaf Clason an opened in 1888. The modern
graveyard is near the old gallows hill. Skönsmon's
development to an industrial community began
in the 1850s when sawmills became a major industry.
This also created a need for for church services.
Location: Kyrkbergsvägen 18. In Skönsmon,
just south of central Sundsvall. Visible from
the E4 road.

Nacksta kyrka (Nacksta Church)
This church is special because of its boat shape,
with a pointed 'fore' and 'aft' and a roof shaped
like the hull of a wooden boat. The naval character
is also evident inside the church, where the
floor slopes up to the altar. Location: In Nacksta.
3 km west of Sundsvall. Follow the E14 road
and turn left.

Njurunda region:
Njurunda kyrka (Njurunda Church)
Built in 1856-62 in neoclassical style. Key
features are the astronomical clock, the church
stables - some of which are 200 years old -
and the church museum in the tower room, with
objects dating back to the 15th century. Next
to the church is an iron-age grave field.
Njurunda kyrko ruin (church ruins)
The church probably originates from the 1100s
but in 1870 the church was destroyed after a
fire caused by thunder & lightning. The
ruins are in Njurundabommen near the Ljungan
river and visible from the E4 road.

Skatan & Lörudden fisherman´s
Village
Skatan: Neighbouring fishing villages south
of Sundsvall with guest harbour and fish smokery,
which sells fish, delicacies and condiments.
Location: Drive the E4 south from Sundsvall,
turn left in Njurundabommen or in Myre Centrum.
Follow the signs towards Skatan and Lörudden.

Galtström
When visiting Skatan and Lörudden you may
also visit Galtström, some 30 km south
of Sundsvall. Galtström with its restored
ironworks, complete with blast furnace, works
office, chapel and forestry museum.

Timrå region:
The world´s largest Y .
This giant sculpture by famous artist Bengt
Lindström is situated by the E4/Midlanda
airport in Timrå. The sculpture is 30,5
meters high. Tourist information is available
from June-Aug. See picture to the right.
Merlo slott
Castle in Timrå which served as a summer
residence house for mr Fredrik and mrs Alona
Bünsow, a wealthy family from Germany.
The family moved to Sundsvall in the 1840s and
the castle was constructed 1883-1885. You need
to make a reservation if you wish to see the

Attractions outside the Sundsvall region
Vättaberget
The view from Vättaberget is truly mesmerizing.
It is believed to be one of the most photo genique
viewpoints in Sweden. Not to be missed! Extraordinary
view of the Indalsälven River. Directions:
Route 86; turn towards the old Liden Church
(G:a kyrka). Turn left after the bridge. Follow
the Vättaberget sign.

The
King Chulalongkorn Memorial Building in Utanede
In 1897, King Chulalongkorn of Siam (present-day
Thailand) visited Sweden and Ragunda municipality.
The Swedish King Oscar II took him to see the
best there is in Sweden, Indalsälven river
valley was one of the sites chosen.
Almost exactly one hundred years later, the
construction of a memorial building in honour
of the King was commenced. There are no similar
constructions anywhere outside Thailand, nor,
as far as is known, are any planned.
Location: 111 km north west of Sundsvall. Ragunda,
Hammarstrand.

Ulvön
Ulvön is actually two islands separated
by a narrow channel. The harbour is on the northern
island and is a popular destination in the summer.
From Lotsberget you have an astounding view
of the fishing village.
Stroll around and visit the 17th century chapel,
where the roof and walls are covered with beautiful
paintings. You can travel here by boat from
Köpmanholmen, Örnsköldsvik, Docksta
or Ullånger. Three different shipping
companys regulary operates the island with daily
departures.
There are two guest harbours and a good selection
of food and lodging. There is, for instance,
”surströmming”, fermented Baltic
hering. You should visit the 300-year old fishing
village of Sandviken a place of great historical
an cultural interest. The boathouses have been
restored and can be hired. The southwestern
side of southern Ulvön is a nature reserve
with hiking trails and rest stations.

Skuleberget
There is a wonderful view from the summit of
the mountain. Conquer Skuleberget by cable car,
or by climbing the popular mountain trail. There
are cabins, camping, a slalom slope and a restaurant
here. Annual events include the Skule Song Festival
in July.

Höga
Kusten bridge
This is the seventh longest suspension bridge
in the world. The pylons are 180 m high and
can be seen from many kilometres away. By the
northern bridge abutment is Hornöberget
and Ångermand Tourist Office. Location:
About 65 km north of Sundsvall. Also read more
